OpenAI - Software Engineer (Frontend) - Technical Screen

#openai
08382

OpenAI · Software Engineer, Frontend (7 years)

Rounds

  1. Technical Screen 1: Refactoring existing code. The problem was presented in a general full-stack style rather than something clearly frontend-specific. The interviewer asked which language to use.
  2. Technical Screen 2: Systems design. The discussion centered on designing a ChatGPT-like experience inside a text area, including backend and database choices.

Questions asked

  • Refactor existing code (general, not strictly frontend)
  • Design a ChatGPT-like product in a text area and explain how it would work, including database selection

Tips

  • Be ready to discuss both frontend and backend considerations, even for a frontend role.
  • For text area and chat UI, Build ChatGPT on FrontendLead is very close.

Do you happen to remember the code they provided to refactor? Doesn’t make sense to ask something like this for a front-end inteview.

Was this all in one interview? Or spread across two interviews?

2 and 3 seem very similar in that one is designing and the other is actually coding?
