Design a Robot Teleoperation Dashboard – Frontend System Design

We’ll walk through the frontend system design for a teleoperation dashboard: a web app where operators monitor a fleet of warehouse robots or sidewalk delivery robots, and take over to drive one remotely when it gets stuck. You’ll see why the video runs on WebRTC instead of HLS, why joystick commands travel on an unreliable data channel, how a deadman watchdog stops the robot when the browser goes quiet, and how to render 50 Hz telemetry without React re-rendering 50 times a second.
This is not the video call question. In a Zoom answer, a late frame is an annoyance. Here, a late frame means the operator is steering a 100 kg machine based on where it was a quarter of a second ago. Every design choice is about latency, freshness, and failing safe.
Problem Statement
Design the frontend for a dashboard that monitors and remotely drives a fleet of mobile robots.
Requirements:
- A fleet view: every robot on a site map with status, battery,... premium content.
